The Muslim American Journalists Association (MAJA) website launched Tuesday, July 13, ahead of the South Asian Journalists Association Convention in New York this weekend.
MAJA is an organization of professionals seeking to address the need for a Muslim voice in the mainstream media.
Our goal is to encourage Muslim Americans to enter the ranks of journalism and improve standards of journalistic coverage of Muslims.
Additionally, at a time when inaccurate media coverage about Muslims and Islam runs rampant and our neighbors are more curious about our faith than ever, MAJA aims to foster a greater societal understanding of Muslim Americans’ cultural identity, interests and concerns.
The organization turned one year old last month and is still very much in development, as is the website.
It isn’t a finished product but its in a usable state. Whether you’re Muslim, a journalist, or just plain interested in Islam in the media, all are welcome to participate (joining is free!). And inshallah, online operations will develop with frequently updated content in all possible formats.
