Sony PS3 drops by $100

Sony cuts PlayStation 3 price by $100 – MSNBC.com

Sony has said it sold 3.6 million PS3s in the fiscal year ending March 31 and expects to sell another 11 million in the current fiscal year. Microsoft said in its most recent quarterly earnings report filed in April that it had shipped 11 million Xbox 360s.

Nintendo, meanwhile, claims it has sold nearly 6 million Wiis worldwide as of March 31, and more than 40 million Nintendo DS handhelds. The company has predicted it will sell another 14 million Wiis and 22 million additional DS systems by the end of the current fiscal year.

At first I thought, wow, it must really be taking a beating by the Wii, but then I noticed it still costs $500 – only a 16.7 per cent price cut. (gl hf)

don't know if you followed the subsequent updates, but here is additional infos:

Sony announced a price drop on the current 60gb ps3 model to $499, as they are starting to ship a new 80gb model that comes bundled with the game Motorstorm, which will retail for the full $599 price tag. However, discounted, 60gb models will no longer ship to the US, so the price drop is effectively "while supplies last." Sony estimates current stocks should last a few months.

Current generation ps3s contain a dedicated chip for compatibility with ps2 games. The new ps3s will no longer carry this chip, and will instead depend upon compatibility software, thereby lowering the production cost per ps3. As including a larger hdd is a near negligible cost, sony can increase apparent consumer value while reducing the cost per unit.
